Crushing anxiety before your first burlesque class!

I recently polled on my Instagram to find out what is the hardest thing about starting a new burlesque class.

And overwhelmingly the responses were about anxiety - not knowing what to expect, the anxiety about starting something new and imposter syndrome.

The fear of the unknown is always real. So, I thought I would share some tips for managing these feelings and setting yourself up for the best first class ever!

Tip #1 - Do Some Research

You’ve probably already done some research on the burlesque school or teacher you have selected. The best thing about the online world that we live in, is that you can do your homework before your class to take some of the stress away:

  • Check public transport/ parking links nearby. And if it’s a close location to you, you might even be able to do a quick walk or drive past and see what it’s like. If you know what stop to get off at, how to get there or where the easy parking is - this can ease on of your fears.

  • Give yourself some extra time to get to that first class. It might be booking that care support or organising to leave work a few minutes early. Or just getting a bit organised and leave the house five minutes early.

  • Check out the social media accounts for the school or teacher you are learning from - they will probably have some reels or photos of their classes to give you an idea about what it looks like.

Tip #2 - Check in with the school

You might have gotten some instructions when you enrolled. Double check the details about what is expected of you: any rules, what to wear or bring.

If you weren’t sent something ahead of time it could be worth e-mailing or phoning and just seeing if there is something you need to wear or any expectations from the school.

Tip #3 - Don’t be afraid to name it up

It’s okay to let your teacher know that you are nervous - either in person or via their preferred correspondence method (email, phone, message). They might be able to give you a bit more information about what to expect. A bit of reassurance can go a long way.

Tip #4 - Everyone is in the same place as you

Remember - everyone is or has been exactly in this spot. Everyone has had that first class and started as a newbie. So you are not the first person and you will not be the last person in that position. Know that it is a totally normal feeling, and one that will be temporary - not permanent.

What are your tips for someone nervous about starting a burlesque class? I’d love to hear !
