How to Rehearse Your Burlesque Act
A lot of us are heading into that end of year hectic period.
That often means in general extra performances and events (burlesque or otherwise!)
I know that we are not the only burlesque school that has celebration events at the end of the year.
So I’ve put together some great tips for beginners - or anyone really!- on how to successfully rehearse.
It seems straight forward enough, but like preparing for an exam, there is a strategy behind practicing. It’s about being mindful and using your time wisely and to maximum effect. Not just booking a studio or putting your music on and hoping that it will work out.
🎭 Take small steps
Practice in layers: Don’t try to run the whole act perfectly right away—focus on one section of choreography or performance at a time.
Film yourself: Watching back helps you spot any sections you might want to revise
Positive self-talk: Replace “I’m not good enough” with “I’m learning and improving every practice “ . You can download my affirmation cards too for mindset practice!
💃 Practical Rehearsal Tips
Short & focused: 15–20 mins of focused rehearsal is better than an exhausting hour. And often we don’t have hours of time available!
Use your space: why not get together with a friend or two and use a space together? It could be taking advantage of someone with a spare room, or sharing a studio or hall hire together and splitting the fees!
Practice with costume/props: Start early so you know how things feel and move (heels, fans, gloves, etc.)
✨ Performance Polish - Burlesque is performing not just dancing !
Facials & presence: Don’t just practice steps—practice the story and expressions. Put your music on and tell the story with just your face!
Practice audience connection: Imagine where the audience will be and practice eye contact and keeping your gaze at eye level.
If you are feeling brave practice in front a friend or student! Honestly, making eye contact and performing to people you know is so much scarier than doing it on stage… if you can nail this you can nail the show!
🧘 Pre-Show Prep - Make sure you have done a flat out run!
Mock performance: Do at least one full run like it’s the real thing (in costume, with no stopping).
