Developing a burlesque solo - with Heidi Hole!

Enjoy another post in my ongoing series of exceptionally sporadic posts - catching up with performers who are embarking on the Act Development Course.

This year, I’ve been able to offer this course in two parts of the year, with performers being able to choose to work to a solo performance at our mid year or end of year Burlesque Showcase.

This week, I caught up with Heidi Hole who will be making a burlesque solo debut at our May Burlesque Showcase on 17 and 18 May 2025 at the Moonah Arts Centre

Heidi spoke about burlesque and it being an ongoing interest and passion for her:

I cannot pinpoint a first spark but it’s the hypnotic nature of the human body as it slowly moves that captivates me the most. Connection without touch.

I’ve always performed. I just didn’t require an audience. These days, I love the kick I get out of engaging with people. Doesn’t matter if it’s on a stage, crowd work or hanging with the cast behind the scenes.

Heidi also mentioned that the bonus of performing a solo is the value of being able to improvise and just go with the flow of the music!

Now here comes the part where I ask performers to give their best tips or advice to anyone thinking about breaking into that solo debut.

What has been the biggest challenge getting your solo together?

Sourcing decent rhinestones without remortgaging the house.

What have you learnt about developing your solo? What advice would you give to someone else?

Get your costume together as early as possible. I always have additional last minute ideas and having the time to create them is a blessing.

(Developing a solo)…is so much more rewarding than you think it will be. Also, ask for advice from everyone on everything. It’s a great community and I wish I did it years ago.

What are you most excited about performing at our show?
I have put a lot of hours into my costume and I’m excited to show off my creation!
