What are my backstage rules at a burlesque show?

Backstage rules in the world of burlesque are an essential part of the performance.

While burlesque classes are often fun, inclusive and vibrant, once you want to get on the stage you need to approach your work with a level of professionalism as you would in any other art form or business.

  1. One of the most important rules is maintaining respect for all performers and crew members. Backstage should be a safe and inclusive space where everyone feels supported. But you also need to be mindful that stress and anxiety are going to be different for different people - be considerate and aware

  2. Be on time

I cannot stress this one enough. A crucial rule is punctuality. Being on time for rehearsals and shows helps to make sure any technical runs happen smoothly and that you have time to plan or rehearse any potential problems. As a producer, I’d also add that time is money! Being late and unprepared can end up costing more in venue or technician hire. Check your run sheet and call times and give yourself plenty of time.

  3. Keep the noise down!

Additionally, backstage etiquette includes keeping noise levels to a minimum, as performers need focus and concentrate before going on stage. While some performers love a chat , you have to be sensitive to the person (hello, it’s me!) that maybe needs a quiet space.

  4. Be considerate around privacy

For student or community shows particularly, maintaining privacy is vital. Backstage is where performers often prepare and change costumes. Make sure if you are doing selfies or photos you don’t have someone’s bare ass in the background.

One thing I am conscious of is that when people are starting burlesque - and maybe aren’t professional performers- not every man and their dog knows about their hobby. So check before you get or post photos and just respect that physical boundary backstage and the online one!

Performers! Producers! What are your rules backstage? Or what behaviours make you so joyous that we should encourage???
