Should I produce a burlesque show? Words of advice!

So you want to produce a burlesque event?

Great!

Before you dive in and tackle this big responsibility, take a tip from one producer to another. There are a huge number of skills you need to make this happen.

You don’t just pull a bunch of performers together, find a stage and hit go.

As part of your preparation, at a minimum, you need to know:

  • How to design a poster or flyer (or how to hire someone to do this)

  • How to create a press release

  • How to use social media effectively

  • How to manage a team

  • How to undertake flyer runs or promotional events

  • How to budget and plan

If you don’t know where to start - time to do your research and start learning.

My word of caution is that managing a burlesque events takes more that setting up an event on Facebook and hiring a venue. You can’t get 500 people along to a show without some management and communications strategy.

Put the preparation in and you can make great things happen. But in a day where you are competing against other events, festivals and Netflix you need to be able to get bums on seats. And event experienced producers find this hard.

What are your tips for pulling events together? What stuff often gets overlooked?

Love to hear your advice!
